When Jerry and Christy Shannon traveled to Ethiopia to adopt their daughter Hana in 2008, their lives were forever changed. After returning home to the US with Hana, the couple came to believe that God was calling them to move to Ethiopia. When the family first arrived in Ethiopia, their plan was to plant a church. As time went on, they realized that God was calling them to serve the poor and vulnerable families.
Embracing Hope Ethiopia was founded by Jerry and Christy Shannon in 2010. The ministry exists to come alongside children and families who are living in poverty. The Shannon’s vision is to develop ways to keep families together, in order to prevent children from being orphaned. Not long after Jerry
and Shannon moved to Ethiopia, they noticed mothers struggling to work and provide for their families, while also caring for young children.
They were inspired to start a daycare that would meet this practical need, meeting this practical need, but also empowering families to overcome the emotional social and spiritual causes of poverty. Embracing Hope Ethiopia now serves nearly 200 vulnerable children and families. The ministry has grown to now include a Day Care Center, School, Reading Room and Ministry Training Center.
I interviewed Jerry Shannon as I was writing Chapter 10 of In Defense of the Fatherless. I was both challenged and inspired by Jerry’s story. Embracing Hope Ethiopia is doing a remarkable job coming alongside families facing desperate circumstances.
